Ron Jefferson - The Ron Jefferson Choir - Sam LP
180 Gram Vinyl, Limited to 1,000 Copies
A rare French jazz session recorded in Paris in 1965, this self-titled album documents the short-lived trio that New York drummer Ron Jefferson led during his mid-'60s stay overseas. A former member of The Jazz Modes and the Les McCann trio, Jefferson teamed with fellow U.S. expats Roland Haynes (bass) and Buz Saviano (guitar) for a set that fuses hard bop with the deep influence of the band's travels in Senegal — heard most powerfully on the standout "Africa the Beautiful," where Jefferson plays flute and Senegalese percussion. A commercial failure on release, it has since become a sought-after rarity, reissued here remastered from the original mono master tapes.
