Recorded at the Hitsville USA studio for Berry Gordy's short-lived Workshop Jazz imprint, drummer Roy Brooks' 1964 debut injects a Motor City soul-jazz groove into a hard-bop foundation. Brooks is joined by fellow Detroit natives George Bohannon and Hugh Lawson, along with Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook and Gene Taylor, for an engaging set that fuses modern jazz rigor with an irresistible beat. The Verve By Request edition is transferred from analog tapes, remastered on 180-gram vinyl and pressed at Third Man in Detroit.
