Recorded in 1963 for Atlantic, Stitt Plays Bird is Sonny Stitt's heartfelt homage to Charlie "Bird" Parker. Stitt returns to the alto saxophone for a program of eight Parker classics plus Jay McShann's "Hootie Blues," joined by John Lewis on piano, Jim Hall on guitar, Richard Davis on bass and Connie Kay on drums. The result balances bebop fire with melodic delicacy, with "Scrapple From The Apple" a particular highlight. Remastered using pure analog components from the master tapes through to the cutting head.
