Technics - SL-1200G-S Direct Drive Turntable System (Silver)
The turntable that brought the SL-1200 back: a twin-rotor coreless motor, a three-layer brass-and-aluminium platter, a magnesium tonearm, and a four-layer plinth topped with 10mm of machined aluminium. Eighteen kilograms of it.
When Technics restarted SL-1200 production in 2016 it did not simply retool the old MK5. The SL-1200G is a ground-up reference design that happens to wear the familiar shape, and almost nothing inside it is carried over.
The motor is coreless — no iron in the stator, so no cogging — and it is twin-rotor. Technics’ reasoning is that splitting the magnetic drive across two rotors reduces the load on the bearing while holding torque high and cutting the small vibrations that come with rotation. Starting torque is 0.32N·m and the platter is at 33 1/3 in seven tenths of a second.
The platter is brass and aluminium die-cast combined, three layers with rubber damping, 332mm across and 3.6kg. The tonearm is magnesium rather than aluminium — lighter for a given stiffness, and better self-damped — in Technics’ universal static-balance geometry with 230mm effective length, 22° offset and a removable headshell. Arm height adjusts across 6mm.
Underneath it all is a four-layer cabinet: aluminium die-cast, BMC, heavyweight-class rubber and a hairline-finished 10mm aluminium top panel. That is where a good deal of the 18kg lives, and it is the reason the deck sits still.
This one publishes a rumble figure, which most of the range does not: 78dB, IEC 98A weighted. Wow and flutter is 0.025% W.R.M.S., and here Technics does cite the standard — JIS C5521.
No cartridge, no phono stage. A PHONO output, an earth terminal, and the expectation that you already know what you are plugging it into. Technics has since announced the SL-1200GME Master Edition as, in their words, the final version of the SL-1200G series — so if you want the standard G, this is the moment.

Claims circulate online about where Technics builds its turntables; none of them come from Technics, so we are not going to repeat them here as fact.
- Warranty: Panasonic administers Technics warranty in the United States and the term varies by model rather than by product category. The SL-1200G is listed in Technics’ own US warranty table at three years parts and three years labour. Technics states that product registration is not required and does not extend coverage. A dated sales receipt is required, coverage runs to the original purchaser, and the product must be purchased and serviced in the United States. Non-rechargeable batteries, antennas and cosmetic cabinet parts are excluded. Note that Technics’ warranty statement does not explicitly name styli or cartridges as excluded items, even though wear-part exclusion is normal industry practice — we would not assume coverage either way without asking Panasonic first.
