The only group on the legendary Black Jazz roster, The Awakening deserve to be heralded as one of the great bands of early-'70s jazz. Mirage (1973) was their second and final album, featuring the same Chicago-based, AACM-rooted lineup as their debut with the notable addition of bassist Rufus Reid on a couple of tracks. Spiritual jazz, free jazz, soul jazz and fusion are woven into a beautiful whole that is greater than the sum of its parts — abstract, varied in mood and texture, yet endlessly powerful and transporting. This Real Gone Music edition marks the first time Mirage has been reissued on LP.
