James Newton Howard's score for M. Night Shyamalan's UNBREAKABLE (2000) was the composer's second collaboration with the director, following The Sixth Sense. At Shyamalan's request the score was kept deliberately simple and distinctive, minimizing instrumentation to strings, trumpets, and piano, with some material recorded in a converted London church for its "misterioso" sound. The result is a haunting, restrained companion to the film's grounded take on the superhero myth.
