Coming after 1968's expansive, jazz-inflected Astral Weeks, Moondance marked a complete about-face — Van turning his gaze toward sunnier climes with a seamless set of tightly composed, R&B-soaked songs brimming with warmth and energy. "Crazy Love," "Caravan," and "Brand New Day" could have been covered by any great soul singer. Nearly every track here is a stone-cold classic, and the album remains one of the most important touchstones of its era.
