Back in the seventies, guitarist Robben Ford recruited keyboardist Russell Ferrante, bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer Ricky Lawson as the backing band for a solo album — a session that eventually gave birth to Yellowjackets. The self-titled debut kicks off with the groove of "Matinee Idol" and defines the sound of early-eighties jazz-fusion, with Ford's bluesy guitar shining on "Imperial Strut," "Priscilla" and the energetic "Rush Hour." It still sounds as fresh as the day it was released.
